Beach Loss (Prevented). Construction of the seawall required some dredging in the channel north of Hurricane Island, which changed the pattern of longshore currents. As a result, beaches at the southern end of the island have begun to erode as they lose sand. Movement of the shoreline often threatens beachfront properties, but the purchase of open space along the beach mitigates this problem considerably. The beach will retreat some distance, but it will not retreat across property lines.
